They Knew?
-
We are dealing here with the unrighteous, these who know in their hearts
that God is the Creator, but turn away to follow their own lusts. Many
of them profess Christianity - even those in positions of leadership in
their denominations.
-
-
Please don't be like one of them, the Lord your Creator loves you with
a wondrous love and would take delight in you and protect you from all
your foes, spiritual as well as temporal, if only you would love Him in
return.
-
-
You see His love is conditional, and once you have the will to love Him
and be obedient as to a loving Heavenly Father, He shall make it easy for
you, both spiritually and temporally.
-
-
In reading the first few chapters of the good news that Luke wrote about,
it was shown to this writer in no uncertain manner that the Jews of the
day, both the common people as well as the leaders, should have known that
Jesus was the Messiah, but most of them turned away from their redemption
because they followed their own way, instead of that of their God, Yahweh.
-
Because of their misinterpretation of an Old Covenant passage, many were
expecting a Messiah that would release them from the yoke of the Romans,
an earthly king, so they presumed that Jesus couldn't be the Messiah. They
couldn't see the Spiritual Kingdom.

-
God still says today "Search for Me and I shall be found":
-
Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD
hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before
him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. And
they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up
my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth
him.
-
(Malachi 3:16-17)
-
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
-
(Romans 10:17)
-
-
Let's look at the evidence presented in Luke's gospel:
-
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named
Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters
of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous
before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord
blameless.
-
(Luke 1:5-6)
-
But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard;
and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name
John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his
birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink
neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost,
even from his mother's womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he
turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and
power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and
the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared
for the Lord. And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this?
for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. And the angel
answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God;
and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. And,
behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these
things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall
be fulfilled in their season.
-
(Luke 1:13-20)
-
And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long
in the temple. And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and
they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned
unto them, and remained speechless.
-
(Luke 1:21-22)
-
And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five
months, saying, Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he
looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
-
(Luke 1:24-25)
-
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city
of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was
Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And
the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly
favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in
her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto
her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold,
thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call
his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest:
and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And
he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there
shall be no end.
-
(Luke 1:26-33)
-
And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her
old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For
with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid
of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed
from her. ¶ And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country
with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias,
and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard
the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was
filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said,
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should
come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in
mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she
that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were
told her from the Lord.
-
(Luke 1:36-45)
-
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced
in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:
for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For
he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his
name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation
to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered
the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the
mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath
filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
-
(Luke 1:46-55)
-
And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he
asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they
marvelled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed,
and he spake, and praised God. And fear came on all that dwelt round
about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the
hill country of Judaea. And all they that heard them laid them
up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the
hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled
with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord
God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised
up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; As he
spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world
began: That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all
that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and
to remember his holy covenant; The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of
our enemies might serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness
before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called
the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord
to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by
the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby
the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that
sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into
the way of peace. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was
in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
-
(Luke 1:62-80)
-
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes,
and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
¶ And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord
came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they
were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold,
I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For
unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ
the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was
with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven,
the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and
see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto
us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe
lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known
abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they
that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the
shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in
her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for
all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
-
(Luke 2:7-20)
-
And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were
accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the
Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth
the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) And to offer a sacrifice according
to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or
two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name
was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting
for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it
was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death,
before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into
the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for
him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed
God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according
to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared
before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the
glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marvelled at
those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said
unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and
rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts
of many hearts may be revealed.
-
(Luke 2:22-35)
-
And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe
of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years
from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and four
years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings
and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks
likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption
in Jerusalem.
-
(Luke 2:36-38)
-
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom
of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the
child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew
not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company,
went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and
acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem,
seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him
in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them,
and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his
understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed:
and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold,
thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How
is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went
down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his
mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom
and stature, and in favour with God and man.

(Luke 2:42-52)
-
the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of
repentance for the remission of sins; As it is written in the book of the
words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall
be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked
shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Then said he to the multitude
that came forth to be baptised of him, O generation of vipers, who hath
warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits
worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham
to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones
to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the
root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit
is hewn down, and cast into the fire. And the people asked him, saying,
What shall we do then? He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two
coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let
him do likewise. Then came also publicans to be baptised, and said unto
him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact no more than
that which is appointed you. And the soldiers likewise demanded of him,
saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no
man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their
hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying
unto them all, I indeed baptise you with water; but one mightier
than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he
shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Whose fan is
in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the
wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
-
(Luke 3:2b-18)
-
Now when all the people were baptised, it came to pass, that Jesus also
being baptised, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost
descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from
heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
-
(Luke 3:21-22)
-
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went
out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in
their synagogues, being glorified of all.
-
(Luke 4:14-15)
-
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom
was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to
read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias.
And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because
he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to
heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering
of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach
the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he
gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all
them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say
unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. And all bare
him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of
his mouth.
-
(Luke 4:16-22a)
-
And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? And he said unto them, Ye
will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever
we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. And
he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted
in his own country. But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel
in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months,
when great famine was throughout all the land; But unto none of them was
Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that
was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus
the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled
with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto
the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast
him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
-
(Luke 4:22b-30)
-
And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath
days. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean
devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what
have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to
destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked
him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and
hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying,
What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth
the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into
every place of the country round about.
-
(Luke 4:31-37)
-
Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases
brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and
healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying,
Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them
not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. And when it was day, he
departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came
unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said
unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other
cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues
of Galilee.
-
(Luke 4:40-44)
-
And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were
Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every
town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was
present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which
was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and
to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way
they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop,
and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst
before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man,
thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began
to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive
sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering
said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether
is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive
sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and
take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose
up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own
house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God,
and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
-
(Luke 5:17-26)
-
-
There was enough evidence placed before them, not so. And yet they crucified
Him.
-
They knew all right, or did they?
-
-
While still in the charismatic movement, we once went to listen to a musical
group that were performing in one of the local Methodist churches. This
group of ministering young people came from the Jews for Jesus organisation
and their music was inspired. I remember that one of their songs was called
"Tradition, tradition" and they sang the story of how they were bound by
tradition until they met their Messiah face to face. The joyful faces made
it plain that these people had something that they could see, that they
wished to share.
-
And yet - when they were finished, the "Reverend" stood up, went to the
pulpit and said something like "we are proud of our tradition" - and the
anointing of the Holy Spirit that we had felt disappeared as He departed.
-
You see, these people should have known, but somehow they were blinded
to the Truth.
-
-
The Lord of hosts spoke through His Old Covenant prophet about the matter:
-
Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people
their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me
daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness,
and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances
of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. Wherefore have we
fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted
our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast
ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. Behold, ye fast for strife
and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast
as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
-
(Isaiah 58:1-4)
-
Then God shows what it's all about:
-
Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul?
is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth
and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable
day to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose
the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed
go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread
to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house?
when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not
thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning,
and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall
go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. Then shalt
thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say,
Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the
putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And if thou draw
out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall
thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought,
and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like
a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And they that shall be
of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations
of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach,
The restorer of paths to dwell in. ¶ If thou turn away thy foot from
the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the
sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him,
not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking
thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and
I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee
with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken
it.
-
(Isaiah 58:5-14)

What's the difference and how can we aspire to it?
-
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced
