Chapter Four
Some Scriptures that Apply
-
-
And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he
shall surely endow her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuse to
give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
-
(Exodus 22:16-17)
-
- And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.
- (Leviticus 19:20)
-
-
And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even
he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer
and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. And the man that lieth
with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them
shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. And
if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put
to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon
them. If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of
them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death;
their blood shall be upon them. And if a man take a wife and her
mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he
and they; that there be no wickedness among you. And if a man lie with
a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast.
And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt
kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their
blood shall be upon them. And if a man shall take his sister, his
father's daughter, or his mother's daughter, and see her nakedness, and
she see his nakedness; it is a wicked thing; and they shall be cut
off in the sight of their people: he hath uncovered his sister's nakedness;
he shall bear his iniquity. And if a man shall lie with a woman having
her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain,
and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall
be cut off from among their people. And thou shalt not uncover the nakedness
of thy mother's sister, nor of thy father's sister: for he uncovereth his
near kin: they shall bear their iniquity. And if a man shall lie with his
uncle's wife, he hath uncovered his uncle's nakedness: they shall bear
their sin; they shall die childless. And if a man shall take his brother's
wife, it is an unclean thing: he hath uncovered his brother's nakedness;
they shall be childless. ¶ Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes,
and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to
dwell therein, spue you not out. And ye shall not walk in the manners of
the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things,
and therefore I abhorred them. But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit
their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth
with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated
you from other people.

(Leviticus 20:10-24)

-
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan,
in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea
over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the
Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof; That they gathered
themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho
and to Ai, They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been
ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old,
and rent, and bound up; And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and
old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and
mouldy. And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto
him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore
make ye a league with us. And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites,
Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them,
Who are ye? and from whence come ye? And they said unto him, From a very
far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God:
for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, And all
that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan,
to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us,
saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and
say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with
us. This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the
day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is
mouldy: And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold,
they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason
of the very long journey. And the men took of their victuals, and asked
not counsel at the mouth of the LORD. And Joshua made peace with them,
and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation
sware unto them. And it came to pass at the end of three days after they
had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours,
and that they dwelt among them. And the children of Israel journeyed, and
came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon,
and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim. And the children of Israel
smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto
them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against
the princes. But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have
sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch
them. This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be
upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. And the princes
said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers
of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. And
Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have
ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from
being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of
my God. And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told
thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to
give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from
before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you,
and have done this thing. And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it
seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. And so did he unto
them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that
they slew them not. And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers
of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto
this day, in the place which he should choose.

And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led
him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave
him Isaac.

Here's someone who wasn't obedient to her marriage covenant:
-
And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being
diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the
state of the king. And the drinking was according to the law; none
did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house,
that they should do according to every man's pleasure. Also Vashti the
queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged
to king Ahasuerus. ¶ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king
was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and
Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the
presence of Ahasuerus the king, To bring Vashti the queen before the king
with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for
she was fair to look on. But the queen Vashti refused to come at
the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king
very wroth, and his anger burned in him. Then the king said to the wise
men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward
all that knew law and judgment: And the next unto him was Carshena,
Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven
princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which
sat the first in the kingdom;) What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according
to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus
by the chamberlains? And Memucan answered before the king and the princes,
Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all
the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces
of the king Ahasuerus. For this deed of the queen shall come abroad
unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes,
when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen
to be brought in before him, but she came not. Likewise shall the
ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which
have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too
much contempt and wrath. If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment
from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the
Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus;
and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than
she. And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published
throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give
to their husbands honour, both to great and small. And the saying pleased
the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province
according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language,
that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should
be published according to the language of every people.

(Esther 1:7-22)
-
-
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have
no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her
life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She
riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and
a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with
the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with
strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise
is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands
to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her
hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is
not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are
clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing
is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth
among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it;
and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are
her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth
with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh
well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and
he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest
them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but
a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of
the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
-
(Proverbs 31:10-31)
-
-
For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will
not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the
salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. And the Gentiles shall
see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called
by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Thou shalt also
be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the
hand of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy
land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and
thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be
married. For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy
sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride,
so shall thy God rejoice over thee.
-
(Isaiah 62:1-5)
-
-
The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen
that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every
high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.
And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me.
But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. And
I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery
I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous
sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. And it came
to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land,
and committed adultery with stones and with stocks. And yet for all this
her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart,
but feignedly, saith the LORD.
-
(Jeremiah 3:6-10)
-
-
Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you:
and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring
you to Zion: And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which
shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
-
(Jeremiah 3:14-15)
-
-
How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn
by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they
then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots'
houses. They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed
after his neighbour's wife. Shall I not visit for these things?
saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
-
(Jeremiah 5:7-9)
-
-
Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn
incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; And come
and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say,
We are delivered to do all these abominations? Is this house, which is
called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I
have seen it, saith the LORD. But go ye now unto my place which
was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I
did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.
-
(Jeremiah 7:9-12)
-
-
But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers
instead of her husband! They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest
thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee
on every side for thy whoredom. And the contrary is in thee from other
women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms:
and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore
thou art contrary. ¶ Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD:
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy
nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all
the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which
thou didst give unto them; Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers,
with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast
loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them
round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that
they may see all thy nakedness. And I will judge thee, as women that break
wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and
jealousy. And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw
down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall
strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave
thee naked and bare. They shall also bring up a company against thee, and
they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.
And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon
thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing
the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more. So will I make my
fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I
will be quiet, and will be no more angry. Because thou hast not remembered
the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things;
behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head,
saith the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine
abominations. ¶ Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this
proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her
daughter. Thou art thy mother's daughter, that lotheth her husband
and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which
lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite,
and your father an Amorite. And thine elder sister is Samaria, she
and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister,
that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters. Yet
hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations:
but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted
more than they in all thy ways. As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom
thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou
and thy daughters.

(Ezekiel 16:32-48)

-
That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands,
and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused
their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the
fire, to devour them. Moreover this they have done unto me:
they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.
For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the
same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done
in the midst of mine house.

(Ezekiel 23:37-39)

-
And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the
word of the LORD came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth
month, even in Chisleu; When they had sent unto the house of God
Sherezer and Regemmelech, and their men, to pray before the LORD, And
to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of
hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating
myself, as I have done these so many years? Then came the word of the LORD
of hosts unto me, saying, Speak unto all the people of the land, and to
the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh
month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even
to me? And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for
yourselves, and drink for yourselves? Should ye not hear
the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem
was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her,
when men inhabited the south and the plain? And the word of the
LORD came unto Zechariah, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying,
Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his
brother: And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor
the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your
heart. But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder,
and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Yea, they made their
hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the
words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets:
therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. Therefore it is come
to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried,
and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts: But I scattered them with
a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was
desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they
laid the pleasant land desolate.

When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed

But as the days of Noe were, so shall also
the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the
flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until
the day that Noe entered into the ark,

(Matthew 24:37-38)

-
For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither
marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.

(Mark 12:25)

-
Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another,
committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her
husband committeth adultery.

(Luke 16:18)

-
Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said
they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even
God.
-
(John 8:41)
-
-
But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is
called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer,
or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what
have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them
that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away
from among yourselves that wicked person.
-
(1 Corinthians 5:11-13)
-
-
Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for
a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication,
let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also
the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but
the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body,
but the wife. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent
for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come
together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. But I speak
this by permission, and not of commandment. For I would that all
men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one
after this manner, and another after that. I say therefore to the unmarried
and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot
contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. And unto
the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife
depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried,
or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away
his wife. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother
hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let
him not put her away. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth
not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. For
the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving
wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but
now are they holy. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother
or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called
us to peace. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy
husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy
wife?
-
(1 Corinthians 7:1-16)
-
But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every
one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches. Is any man called
being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision?
let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision
is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. Let every man abide
in the same calling wherein he was called. Art thou called being
a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it
rather. For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the
Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is
Christ's servant. Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of
men. Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with
God. ¶ Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet
I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say,
that it is good for a man so to be. Art thou bound unto a wife?
seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.
-
(1 Corinthians 7:17-27)
-
-
For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For
all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.
-
(Philippians 2:20-21)
-
-
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children,
obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto
the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they
be discouraged. Servants, obey in all things your masters according
to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of
heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to
the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the
reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth
wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect
of persons.
-
(Colossians 3:18-25)
-
-
Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the
younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters,
with all purity. Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow
have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and
to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. Now
she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth
in supplications and prayers night and day. But she that liveth in pleasure
is dead while she liveth.
-
(1 Timothy 5:1-6)
-
-
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness,
not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That
they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to
love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good,
obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
-
(Titus 2:3-5)
-
-
Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest
that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to
seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed
unto idols.
-
(Revelation 2:20)
-
-
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the
flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty
through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations,
and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God,
and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
