The Kingdom of God 
And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. 
(Luke 17:20-21)
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. 
(Romans 14:17)
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 
(1 Corinthians 15:50)
 
The Kingdom of God is something that we must aspire to. In this lifetime it's not a place but an attitude, an experience, a way of life. If we start off by willingly following after God and His Son Jesus Christ with joy and zest, and are obedient through the word and the Holy Spirit, we shall come close to the spiritual nature of the Kingdom. 

By being continually reminded of our great Saviour through reading His word and praying, we come nearer to understanding what's expected of His citizens and what awaits us one day in the New Jerusalem. 
 

You might say "Yes, Yes, Ohh Yes, I have heard and read of this many times, and have tried to find this kingdom, but just cannot experience what you people are talking about. I love the Lord but am becoming desperate because I realise that I am lacking something." 
Here's an example of what is meant, that was shown to me while praying this morning: 

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 
(Mark 10:17-23)
 
This teaching does not mean that you must give all your money away!!!! 
 
Because money is so dear to everyone's heart, it's merely used as an example. 

What the teaching is pointing to is that we must be prepared to trust God for everything in our lives, even health. We must rely on Him, lean on Him, knowing that He will protect us from hunger etc. 
And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 
(Luke 12:22-24)
 
If you believe that His Son, who is so high in power that He made this earth and everything on it, actually willingly humbled Himself, allowing those that He created to kill Him, then surely you can believe that He will look after His own. 

When you realise that you are nothing, that the "I" who drives around in expensive motor cars and has an easy lifestyle is not even considered or looked at; that He only considers who you are when you consider who He is and are prepared to follow Him without compromise; then you are on the right path to experience His presence. 
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 
(Romans 8:1-9)
 
And one day, after perhaps ten or twenty years, only when you can handle it, might He ask you to give some or all of His money - that you are looking after for Him - to someone else who will be able to use it for His kingdom purposes. You will do so without a qualm. 
 
You see, without this initial commitment on your part, you will not attain to the Kingdom. 

Sorry. 
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 
(John 3:3)
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 
(Luke 24:46-47)
 
Today in church, the following teaching was forcibly brought home to us and it is hoped that we all saw what the Holy Spirit was showing. 

In this one chapter of the Bible is perhaps the best illustration of what it's all about - this Christianity; this hope that we have of everlasting life with our Master. 
We must at all times bear in mind that the God of the Old Covenant (Jehovah) is the same God who gave us the promises contained in the New Covenant. 
Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left. For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images. And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them. And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about. And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem. ¶ Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God. And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem. And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and amend the house: Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed. And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick. Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters. ¶ And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses. And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it. And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen. Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes. And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king's, saying, Go, enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book. And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect. And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah: Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched. And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard; Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD. Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.  Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD. And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book. And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers. 
(2 Chronicles 34:1-33)
We see here that when he was only sixteen years old he began to seek after the God of David his ancestor. Imagine an impressionable young boy, who was raised up as the absolute ruler of a nation. He could have had his heart's desire of worldly gifts, yet he searched for God. This righteousness made him different from most of the kings of the line of David before him. 
 
Look at what happened to his father:
So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead. ¶ Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerusalem. But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them; And humbled not himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more. And his servants conspired against him, and slew him in his own house. 
(2 Chronicles 33:20-24)
 
When Josiah was twenty one he started cleaning up Jerusalem and the rest of his kingdom. The next thing he did was to organise the workers to repair the church (the temple of the LORD) of his God and while this was going on, a book was found - the book of the law of Moses. It had been so long that the people had not used the book, that they became unaware of its existence! 

This fact also tells us the fact that Josiah was himself righteous and that he followed after God without the knowledge of the law. This seems to be borne out by the words in verse three: 
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: 
 
We notice what happened when he heard the words of the book for the first time - he tore his clothes. This was a custom of the Jews to show sorrow and is mentioned many times in the Bible. 

And here is the key verse in the chapter, indeed it's the key to the Kingdom of God: 
Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD. 
(2 Chronicles 34:27)
 
It's called repentance.
 
Lastly we see that king Josiah made a covenant with the LORD his God.
And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book. 
(2 Chronicles 34:31)
 
Today the conditions for entrance into the Kingdom are the same; 
  • Only those who are righteous in themselves will seek God. 
  • He will be found, only by those who repent. They shall have their sins forgiven when they ask it of God and when they forgive others who have hurt, misused, stolen from them etc. They shall receive God's blessing and the gift of the Holy Spirit living inside them. 
  • When we accept the unbreakable Covenant made on our behalf by our Covenant Representative, the Lord Jesus Christ, willingly and joyfully walking the path of obedience, we shall be shown many spiritual truths that make up His Kingdom. 
This is what Jesus meant when He said "behold, the kingdom of God is within you." 

We must be born again or else we shall never know that kingdom. 
 
Our Own Righteousness
 
Jesus said:
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 
(Matthew 5:6)
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. 
(Matthew 5:20)
In other articles in this series we have read who the Scribes and Pharisees were in the days of Jesus of Nazareth and we know also who those are today. 

The scripture says that we must be more righteous than they. 
Therefore, if one of us takes part in worship in a gathering of Christians where there is a "leader" such as a Pastor, Priest or Reverend and he leads his flock astray by departing from the word; rather following the church council ruling of his denomination, he is a Pharisee, not so. 
 
Each of us must be more righteous than him.
If you are in a normal church, this might be a hard pill to swallow because most people look up to their spiritual leaders; but we are commanded to do it. 

How far does your righteousness stretch? 
 
I know a lady that "loves the Lord", she is very interested in religious matters and is a worker in her church denomination. However, her frequent questions on Christian matters shows that she is unfamiliar with God's word. This shows that she is still in the first category above because she hasn't been given the love of finding out more about her Saviour for herself. Like so many churchgoers she relies on others to teach her. 

Someone else claims to be born again, perhaps because she has been taught about it, but shows no spiritual discernment, is always thinking about "me", making and breaking agreements at will, condemning acquaintances and people of other cultures, etc. She also doesn't have the Kingdom within her. 
 
There are also many "Christian" sites on the Internet managed by people of the first category and when a citizen of the Kingdom reads the contents of the site, he or she mourns with sorrow at the misinformation that is placed out there, leading astray those pilgrims who are genuinely seeking something in addition to what they already have. 
 
Let's find out more by reading what the Bible says about the Kingdom. We ignore these teachings at our eternal peril. 

Please take your time, reading and contemplating what the Holy Spirit is showing you as you study these passages in context: 
 
After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. 
(Luke 10:17-20)
 
For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. 
(Psalms 22:28)
 
And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD'S. 
(Obadiah 1:21)
 
And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem. 
(Micah 4:8)
 
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one

Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 
(Matthew 16:19)
 
At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 
(Matthew 18:1-4)
 
Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.

Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.

It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it. And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. ¶ And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
