From Faith to Faith
-
We shall see from a careful study of the Scriptures below that first there
was faith (Abraham), then in the presence of God on mount Sinai and the
writings in Leviticus etc., the law. Jesus crucified the law because all
who believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead are living by
faith.
-
Mankind started with faith and ends in faith.
-
-
In Paul's day the law of the ten commandments etc. was the stumbling block
that got in the way of faith and obedience through the Holy Spirit.
-
And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and
said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot
be saved. When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and
disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain
other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about
this question. And being brought on their way by the church, they passed
through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles:
and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. And when they were come
to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles
and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them. But
there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying,
That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep
the law of Moses. And the apostles and elders came together for to consider
of this matter. And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up,
and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while
ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear
the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts,
bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto
us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by
faith. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the
disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe
that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even
as they. Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas
and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the
Gentiles by them. And after they had held their peace, James answered,
saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: Simeon hath declared
how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people
for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David,
which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will
set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the
Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these
things. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the
Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain
from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from
things strangled, and from blood.
-
(Acts 15:1-20)
-
-
So it is with the law of the Jews of the present time.

-
Today, among the Gentiles, the stumbling block is obedience to the church
systems (the law, the flesh) of the various denominations, which blankets
(quenches) the working of the Holy Spirit.
-
As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you
to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross
of Christ.
-
(Galatians 6:12)
-
-
We know from God's word as explained in previous writings that it is personal
faith in God through the Lord Jesus Christ and personal obedience that
sets the working of the Holy Spirit in motion, resulting in a rich spiritual
life - a life that is made available for God's glory.
-
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing
in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall bear his own
burden.
-
(Galatians 6:4-5)
-
Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing
from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors
until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children,
were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of
the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under
the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive
the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the
Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou
art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through
Christ.

But, to go on:
-
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the
faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might
be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for
by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
-
(Galatians 2:16)
-
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God
unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also
to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from
faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For
the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness
of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be
known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly
seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when
they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful;
but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory
of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and
to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also
gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour
their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into
a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who
is blessed for ever. Amen.

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the
truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified
among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the
works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having
begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered
so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. He therefore that
ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth
he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Even as
Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know
ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of
Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen
through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying,
In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are
blessed with faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law
are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that
continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to
do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it
is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of
faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed
us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of
Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might
receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Brethren, I speak after
the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if
it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. Now to Abraham
and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of
many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say,
that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the
law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that
it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be
of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to
Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added
because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise
was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. Is
the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had
been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should
have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that
the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith
which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster
to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But
after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye
are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you
as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither
Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor
female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's,
then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord
Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you,
making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation
in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened;
that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of
the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the
exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the
working of his mighty power
