If Ye Continue

The following two writings are separated by seven years in time. For some
unknown reason the first was never published on this web site and only
now that the second has been written was the first rediscovered.
-
You will notice how the two are inter-linked; discerning the same message
from two viewpoints.

All Glory to the Living God!

If Ye Continue in My Word
-
-
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up
the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that
I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these
things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone;
for I do always those things that please him. As he spake these
words, many believed on him. Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed
on him, If ye continue in my word, then are
ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free.
-
(John 8:28-32)
-
We see here that only if we are obedient to the word of God are we His
disciples and only then will we know the truth that will set us free.
-
Free from the shackles of this life; from fear of the unknown, from attack
upon our person or property, from death or disease.
-
-
People who aren't obedient that claim the gifts of God for themselves are
therefore not His disciples and the gifts that they receive cannot be from
God or else He is a liar. If God is a liar, then surely we worship Him
to no purpose. (See Titus 1:2)
-
-
What does this mean?
-
Either we must worship Him in spirit and in truth to the best of our ability,
believing that the Bible is the inspired word of God; or we might as well
spend our time making money and enjoying our lives with wine women and
song.
-
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of
wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it
bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he
that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If
any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my
servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
-
(John 12:24-26)
-
-
We also see in the first Scripture above that if we speak that which the
Father shows us, that we don't claim this knowledge for ourselves, that
we do nothing of ourselves, then He is with us and we aren't left alone.
This is an assurance from God Himself through the person of the Lord Jesus
Christ; and if we believe it, having the faith in God, it will be
so.
-
-
As we continue in His word we shall, as time goes by, read various passages
of Scripture over and over again and each time we do so, the Lord the Holy
Spirit will show us something different because our circumstances in life
have changed from the last time we read it and He has a purpose for showing
us.
-
-
For example when we read the following passage believing that this
actually happened and is not just a story from some book:
-
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his
birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man,
or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither
hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should
be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while
it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the
world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he
spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes
of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go,
wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.)
He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. The neighbours
therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said,
Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said, This is he: others said,
He is like him: but he said, I am he. Therefore said they
unto him, How were thine eyes opened? He answered and said, A man that
is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go
to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received
sight. Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. They
brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. And it was the sabbath
day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Then again the Pharisees
also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put
clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. Therefore said some of the
Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day.
Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there
was a division among them. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest
thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and
received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received
his sight. And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was
born blind? how then doth he now see? His parents answered them and said,
We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: But by what means
he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he
is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. These words spake
his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already,
that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of
the synagogue. Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. Then
again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the
praise: we know that this man is a sinner. He answered and said, Whether
he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas
I was blind, now I see. Then said they to him again, What did he to thee?
how opened he thine eyes? He answered them, I have told you already, and
ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also
be his disciples? Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple;
but we are Moses' disciples. We know that God spake unto Moses: as for
this fellow, we know not from whence he is. The man answered and
said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from
whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. Now
we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of
God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. Since the world began was
it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If
this man were not of God, he could do nothing. They answered and said unto
him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they
cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found
him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son
of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe
on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen
him, and it is he that talketh with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe.
And he worshipped him. And Jesus said, For judgment
I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that
they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees
which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind
also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye
should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
-
(John 9:1-41)
-
We see immediately in the first few verses that the reason why this man
was blind from birth was for a reason of God's. Some of us might say within
ourselves "but that's not fair, just think of that poor man suffering all
those years needlessly." Isn't this perhaps because we don't realise who
God actually is? He can do anything He wants. Who are we to question His
righteousness.
-
-
Also, what do verses four and five mean to you?
-
I must work the works of him that sent me, while
it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the
world, I am the light of the world.
-
(John 9:4-5)
-
If you worship in a traditional church, this passage could be used to show
that the gift of tongues is no longer applicable because we are now in
darkness. But if in a Pentecostal church you have been taught that if you
don't speak in tongues you're not a Christian.
-
Both of these are false, being the traditions of men, but what is the truth?
-
You will know it if you are taught by God and you can only be taught by
Him if you are obedient and continue in His Holy word.
-
-
This same subject is explained in more detail a little further along in
John:
-
Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is
the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon
you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While
ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.
These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed
not on him: That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which
he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm
of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that
Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart;
that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their
heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. These things said Esaias,
when he saw his glory, and spake of him. Nevertheless among the chief rulers
also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess
him, lest they should
be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than
the praise of God. Jesus cried and said, He
that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And
he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world,
that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any
man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to
judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth
not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the
same shall judge him in the last day. For
I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a
commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that
his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even
as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
-
(John 12:35-50)
-
We see here that those who didn't believe His report, who were not convicted
of the truth of God's majesty, had their eyes blinded. Because they weren't
righteous in themselves they were unable to see the truth, even though
they heard the thunder of God's voice. (See verses 28 & 29)
-
-
Only certain people will come to know the Truth, it will not be revealed
to all!
-
-
Some will not be able to perceive it:
-
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the
god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest
the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should
shine unto them.
-
(2 Corinthians 4:3-4)
-
-
We have read in other dissertations in this series that God, after much
longsuffering and lovingkindness, finally lost patience with the children
of Israel and allowed them to be led into captivity in Babylon. Also the
significance of this Babylonian captivity was examined1.
-
If we read the following passages of Scripture we shall see that certain
of the returned children of Israel recommitted themselves to be in Covenant
with God.
-
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who
keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before
thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our
priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people,
since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. Howbeit thou art
just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have
done wickedly: Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our
fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies,
wherewith thou didst testify against them. For they have not served thee
in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and
in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned
they from their wicked works. Behold, we are servants this day,
and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit
thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it: And
it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because
of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle,
at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. And because of
all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes,
Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
-
(Nehemiah 9:32-38)
-
Now those that sealed were, Nehemiah, the Tirshatha, the son of
Hachaliah, and Zidkijah, .
-
(Nehemiah 10:1)
-
And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the
singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from
the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and
their daughters, every one
having knowledge, and having understanding; They clave to their
brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to
walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to
observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments
and his statutes; And that we would not give our daughters unto the people
of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons:
-
(Nehemiah 10:28-30)
-
-
We also see what Ezra, Nehemiah's friend, found on his return to Jerusalem:
-
Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people
of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves
from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations,
even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites,
the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. For they
have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that
the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands:
yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.
And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked
off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. Then were
assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel,
because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I
sat astonied until the evening sacrifice. ¶ And at the evening sacrifice
I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle,
I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God, And
said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God:
for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass
is grown up unto the heavens. Since the days of our fathers have
we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities
have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand
of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil,
and to confusion of face, as it is this day. And now for a little
space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us
a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our
God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage,
but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to
give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations
thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. And now, O our
God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,
Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land,
unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness
of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled
it from one end to another with their uncleanness. Now therefore give not
your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your
sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong,
and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to
your children for ever. And after all that is come upon us for our evil
deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished
us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such
deliverance as this; Should we again break thy commandments, and join in
affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry
with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be
no remnant nor escaping? O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous:
for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are
before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because
of this.
-
(Ezra 9:1-15)
-
Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting
himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel
a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people
wept very sore. And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons
of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God,
and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is
hope in Israel concerning this thing. Now therefore let us make a covenant
with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according
to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment
of our God; and let it be done according to the law. Arise; for this
matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be
of good courage, and do it. Then arose Ezra, and made the chief
priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according
to this word. And they sware. ¶ Then Ezra rose up from before the
house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib:
and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water:
for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried
away. And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all
the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together
unto Jerusalem; And that whosoever would not come within three days, according
to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should
be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that
had been carried away. Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered
themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the
ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people
sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this
matter, and for the great rain. And Ezra the priest stood up, and said
unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase
the trespass of Israel. Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God
of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the
people of the land, and from the strange wives. Then all the congregation
answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.
But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and
we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one
day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing. Let now
our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken
strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the
elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of
our God for this matter be turned from us. ¶ Only Jonathan the son
of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter:
and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. And the children of
the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of
the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their
names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month
to examine the matter. And they made an end with all the men that had taken
strange wives by the first day of the first month. And among the sons of
the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely,
of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and
Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah. And they gave their hands that they would
put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram
of the flock for their trespass.
-
(Ezra 10:1-19)
-
All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by
whom they had children.
-
(Ezra 10:44)
-
-
As we can see, these Israelites made a commitment to God, to come back
into Covenant with Him. We can also see what this commitment cost them
in worldly terms.
-
-
Going back to John:
-
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that
hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man
serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant
be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
-
(John 12:25-26)
-
-
Only when we take God seriously, being obedient to His word and the
prompting of the Holy Spirit within us will we receive the freedom of the
Truth.
-
-
*A Psalm of David.* I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O LORD,
will I sing. I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt
thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I
will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that
turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. A froward heart shall depart
from me: I will not know a wicked person. Whoso privily slandereth
his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud
heart will not I suffer. Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of
the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way,
he shall serve me. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house:
he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. I will early destroy
all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the
city of the LORD.

Continue in My Love
-
-
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you:
continue ye in my love.
-
(John 15:9)
-
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch
that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in
me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it
abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine,
ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same
bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide
not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather
them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide
in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall
be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit;
so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved
you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide
in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in
his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain
in you, and that your joy might be full.
-
(John 15:1-11)
-
-
We see here that Jesus was speaking about love and joy.
-
Not law or duty.

The nation of the Children of Israel (the Jews) made a Covenant with God
at the foot of the mountain in fear when they saw some of God's Power.
Many of them didn't want to but they saw what God could do.
-
In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of
the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of
Sinai. For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the
desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped
before the mount. And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto
him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob,
and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians,
and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then
ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth
is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy
nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children
of Israel. And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and
laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. And
all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken
we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD. And
the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the
people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And
Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto
Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and
let them wash their clothes, And be ready against the third day: for the
third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount
Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take
heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or
touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put
to death: There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned,
or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live:
when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. And Moses
went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and
they washed their clothes. And he said unto the people, Be ready against
the third day: come not at your wives. And it came to pass on the
third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and
a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud;
so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And Moses
brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood
at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke,
because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended
as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when
the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses
spake, and God answered him by a voice. And the LORD came down upon mount
Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to
the top of the mount; and Moses went up. And the LORD said unto Moses,
Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze,
and many of them perish. And let the priests also, which come near to the
LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them. And Moses
said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou
chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. And
the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou,
and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through
to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them. So Moses went
down unto the people, and spake unto them.
-
(Exodus 19:1-25)
-
And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which
have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee
any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in
heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is
in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them,
nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting
the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth
generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands
of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the
name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless
that taketh his name in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is
the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work,
thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant,
nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in
six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them
is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath
day, and hallowed it. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may
be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not
kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt
not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy
neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant,
nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is
thy neighbour's. And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings,
and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people
saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses,
Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest
we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove
you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. And the
people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where
God was. And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto
the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you
gods of gold. An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice
thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine
oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I
will bless thee. And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt
not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou
hast polluted it. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that
thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

(Exodus 20:1-26)

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel,
that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with
his heart ye shall take my offering.

Before the Law that God handed down to the Jews through Moses, God made
an individual Covenant with Abram1. This was done because Abram
believed God and this was counted as righteousness. (Genesis 15). This
was a Covenant of faith2.
-
The Covenant that Jesus made with Father God on behalf of mankind is also
a Covenant of faith.
-
Moreover, as we have already seen3, this faith must produce
fruit.

The following passage was revealed this morning; one that has been read
many times in the past, but now ties in with the first verse above.
-
It was written in the time of the Law but shows once again what our Holy,
Righteous, unchanging Heavenly Father expects of His servants and children:
-
The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when Nebuchadnezzar king
of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his
dominion, and all the people, fought against Jerusalem, and against all
the cities thereof, saying, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Go
and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD;
Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and
he shall burn it with fire: And thou shalt not escape out of his hand,
but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes
shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee
mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon. Yet hear the word of the
LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of thee, Thou shalt
not die by the sword: But thou shalt die in peace: and with the
burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall
they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, saying,
Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the LORD. Then Jeremiah
the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,
When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all
the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah:
for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah. This is
the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the king Zedekiah
had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem,
to proclaim liberty unto them; That every man should let his manservant,
and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess,
go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew
his brother. Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered
into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and
every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of
them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go. But afterward
they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let
go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for
handmaids. Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD,
saying, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with
your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of bondmen, saying, At the end of seven years let ye go
every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when
he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but
your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear. And ye
were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty
every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the
house which is called by my name: But ye turned and polluted my name, and
caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set
at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection,
to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. Therefore thus saith the
LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one
to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty
for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine;
and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. And
I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which
have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before
me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the
priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts
of the calf; I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and
into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall
be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of
their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into
the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you. Behold,
I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to this city;
and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and
I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.

Here's more
-
Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and
Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto
the greatest, came near, And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech
thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the
LORD thy God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but
a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:) That the LORD thy God may shew
us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do. Then Jeremiah
the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray
unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come
to pass, that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will
declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you. Then they
said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if
we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD thy God shall
send thee to us. Whether it be good, or whether it be evil,
we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee;
that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.
And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto
Jeremiah. Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains
of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least
even to the greatest, And said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God
of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him;
If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull
you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for
I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you. Be not afraid of the
king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the
LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his
hand. And I will shew mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you,
and cause you to return to your own land. But if ye say, We will not dwell
in this land, neither obey the voice of the LORD your God, Saying, No;
but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear
the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
And now therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye remnant of Judah; Thus
saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly set your faces
to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there; Then it shall come to pass,
that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the
land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close
after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die. So shall it be with all
the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall
die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them
shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them. For thus
saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath
been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be
poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be
an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye
shall see this place no more. The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye remnant
of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you
this day. For ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the LORD
your God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto
all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do
it. And now I have this day declared it to you; but
ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing
for the which he hath sent me unto you. Now therefore know certainly that
ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the
place whither ye desire to go and to sojourn.

(Jeremiah 42:1-22)
-
And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking
unto all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the
LORD their God had sent him to them, even all these words, Then
spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all
the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our
God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there: But
Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us
into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry
us away captives into Babylon. So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the
captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the
LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah. But Johanan the son of Kareah, and
all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were
returned from all nations, whither they had been driven, to dwell in the
land of Judah; Even men, and women, and children, and the king's
daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had
left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the
prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah. So they came into the land of Egypt: for
they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even
to Tahpanhes. Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes,
saying, Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the
brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes,
in the sight of the men of Judah; And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD
of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar
the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones
that I have hid; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.

Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto
them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which
Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean
spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with
them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
And there was great joy in that city.

(Acts 8:5-8)
-
And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward
the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which
is desert. And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch
of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge
of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, Was returning,
and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. Then the Spirit said
unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran
thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said,
Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some
man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit
with him. The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led
as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so
opened he not his mouth: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away:
and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh
the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened
his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and
the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And
he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And
he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the
water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were
come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that
the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip
was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities,
till he came to Caesarea.

Are we adequately prepared to meet our Saviour without a guilty feeling
in our souls that we have let Him down?
-
-
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me,
he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto
him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my
sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which
sent me.
-
(John 14:23-24)
-
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the
truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful
looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who
hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the
covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite
unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth
unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge
his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the
living God. But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye
were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; Partly, whilst
ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly,
whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. For ye had compassion
of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing
in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.
Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of
reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will
of God, ye might receive the promise.

-
At first glance it may seem that God is not worth serving because of all
the restrictions on one's pleasures in life.
-
However, as Jesus said "if you love me you will obey my commandments".
He also said "my yoke is easy". Firstly we see that there is a yoke, and
therefore we belong to Him, furthermore that if we love Him we shall find
the yoke easy to live with.
-
If we love someone we will love to do things to please them not so?
-
Also, as we can see in the Bible and from the experiences of others around
us, the closer we walk with our God in obedience, the more He shall bless
us with His Presence and Power.
-
-
Derek Prince, in his book "Chords from David's Harp" wrote the following.
-
Embracing God's Commands
-
-
Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.
Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right;
and I hate every false way. Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth
my soul keep them.
-
(Psalms 119:127-129)
-
-
What is your attitude to God's commands? Do you fear them? Resent them?
Try to get away from them? That is a foolish attitude. God gave us His
commands not to create problems for us, but to solve them; not to harm
us, but to help us. God's love is in His commands. They are given to save
us from ourselves, to save us from evil, to show us the way out of our
difficulties and problems.
-
David had learned that. That is why he said to God, "I love your commands
more than gold, more than pure gold." What is more precious than gold?
Nothing in this created world. But God's commands are infinitely more precious.
David understood that. Instead of running from God's commands, therefore,
or resenting them, or obeying them reluctantly, he embraced them as the
tokens of God's love for him.
-
Love of God's commands automatically produced in David a corresponding
attitude of hatred toward every wrong path - everything contrary to those
commands. There can be no neutrality in moral issues. Love and obedience
to God's commands will cause us to recognise and turn away from all the
deceptive disguises under which evil masquerades. Walking in the light
of those commands keeps us from everything harmful and destructive.

Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth

the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them:
