Part Four
-
The Bride of Christ
-
-
As we have seen from Dr Showers' teaching, the bride of Christ are those
Christians, who at the time of His coming for them, will be found to be
obeying His commandments out of love for Him. They will always have the
name and example of Jesus before their eyes, they will be expecting their
Saviour to appear at any time. Their whole lifestyle will be oriented this
way. This is because they know Him, know that He isn't some fairy-tale
character, know that the greatest gift which they can receive, is that
their eternal life will be in heaven with their Redeemer.
-
Many professing Christians find it too difficult to be obedient to their
Lord, to be disciples. They might, for example, make shady business deals,
or have an unrepentant tongue. Being born again, they are in Covenant with
God through the Lord Jesus Christ unto that day, but they will not
be part of the bride. Let's read the words of the Messiah, the Son of man,
who will come in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory:
-
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord
doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in
what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have
suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in
such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Who then is a faithful
and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to
give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his
lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he
shall make him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil servant shall
say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite
his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord
of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him,
and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and
appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping
and gnashing of teeth.
-
(Matthew 24:42-51)
-
For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling
into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto
them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and
to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway
took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded
with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he
that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had
received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. After
a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents,
saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained
beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou
good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I
will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst
unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast
been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things:
enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one
talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping
where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And
I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there
thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou
wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not,
and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put
my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have
received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give
it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath
shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not
shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable
servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
-
(Matthew 25:14-30)
-
-
We have also previously seen in Exodus 24 that the children of Israel accepted
God's Covenant as a nation, yet here is what happened to them:
-
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Hear ye the words
of this covenant, and speak unto the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants
of Jerusalem; And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel;
Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant, Which
I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out
of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and
do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people,
and I will be your God: That I may perform the oath which I have sworn
unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as
it is this day. Then answered I, and said, So be it, O LORD. Then
the LORD said unto me, Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah,
and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant,
and do them. For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that
I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day,
rising early and protesting, saying, Obey my voice. Yet they obeyed not,
nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their
evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant,
which I commanded them to do; but they did them not. And
the LORD said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and
among the inhabitants of Jerusalem. They are turned back to the iniquities
of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after
other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have
broken my covenant which I made with their fathers. Therefore thus saith
the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be
able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto
them. Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and
cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save
them at all in the time of their trouble. For according to the number
of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number
of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful
thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal. Therefore pray not
thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them: for I will
not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.
What hath my beloved to do in mine house, seeing she hath wrought
lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest
evil, then thou rejoicest. The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree,
fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath
kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. For the LORD of
hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil
of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done
against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.
-
(Jeremiah 11:1-17)
-
The holy flesh is the flesh of the virgin.
-
-
Purity
-
Most of us worship idols of one sort or another. Perhaps this one?
-
Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands,
that which their own fingers have made:
-
(Isaiah 2:8)
-
-
In the New Covenant, Paul advises his Pastor:
-
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled
and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience
is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him,
being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men
be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The
aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness,
not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That
they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to
love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good,
obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. In all things shewing thyself
a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity,
sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the
contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Exhort
servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them
well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing
all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour
in all things. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared
to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we
should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking
for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and
our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem
us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous
of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority.
Let no man despise thee. Put them in mind to be subject to principalities
and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, To speak
evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness
unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient,
deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy,
hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and
love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness
which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing
of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we
should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is
a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly,
that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good
works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
-
(Titus 1:15 - 3:8)
-
A Clean Vessel
-
He also had the following to say to his young assistant:
-
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver,
but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto
honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared
unto every good work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness,
faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender
strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto
all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that
oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the
acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves
out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
-
(2 Timothy 2:20-26)
-
What is a vessel, but an object designed to hold a substance for the purpose
of passing it on. If the vessel is broken it cannot retain the substance,
which means that it will not be used. If the vessel is only clean on the
outside (to impress people), but dirty inside, the substance being passed
on will become polluted. If the substance that is poured into the vessel
is not poured out in a short while, it will gather dust and start evaporating.
It will become contaminated and the vessel may become empty. Empty vessels
might make the most noise, but the noise that they make is hollow.
-
-
We are vessels of the Lord. Are we clean inside, do we pass on the substance
of the Holy Spirit when we receive it, or do we become empty as the result
of keeping it to ourselves. Do we then make a noise?
-
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the
power may be of God, and not of us.
-
(2 Corinthians 4:7)
-
-
Let us endeavour to be perfect for our Lord who paid the greatest price
for us.
-
-
A famous preacher once wrote:
-
Believe me, dear friends, that a vessel fit for the Master's use must
be very clean. It need not be of silver or of gold; it may be but a common
earthen vessel; but it must be very clean, for our God is a jealous God.
He can spy a finger-mark where our eyes could not see it, even with a microscope;
and will not drink out of a vessel which a moment before was at the lips
of Satan. He will not use it if we have been used by self, or if we have
allowed ourselves to be used by the world. Oh, how clean should we be who
expect the Holy Spirit to make use of us! How careful should we be in our
private life as well as in our ordinary walk and conversation.
-
-
To become a good musician one needs to practice, continually improving
until perfection is achieved and the public recital can take place.
-
To become the bride of Christ we have to make ourselves ready for His coming,
to practice until we reach perfection.
-
Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of
the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was
granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for
the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
-
(Revelation 19:7-8)

Scriptures to Continually Study
-
Although still being very far from perfection, I have found the following
passages most helpful in this regard, constantly reading them and absorbing
their teachings:
-
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs?
so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is
a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good
conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying
and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This
wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every
evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits,
without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness
is sown in peace of them that make peace. From whence come wars
and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your
lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire
to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because
ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may
consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know
ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore
will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the
scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud,
but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist
the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw
nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your
hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let
your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
-
(James 3:12 - James 4:10)
-
-
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end
for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus
Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the
former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy,
so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be
ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect
of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your
sojourning here in fear: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed
with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation
received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood
of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was
foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these
last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from
the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit
unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another
with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed,
but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for
ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the
flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which
by the gospel is preached unto you. Wherefore laying aside all malice,
and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As
newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
-
(1 Peter 1:13 - 1 Peter 2:3)
-
-
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain
from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation
honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers,
they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God
in the day of visitation. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for
the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors,
as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and
for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with
well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free,
and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as
the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear
God. Honour the king. Servants, be subject to your masters
with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure
grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be
buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do
well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable
with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered
for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did
no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled,
reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself
to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his
own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:
by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but
are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
-
(1 Peter 2:11 - 1 Peter 2:25)
-
-
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another,
love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering
evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing
that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he
that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from
evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do
good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are
over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but
the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is
he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and
if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid
of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your
hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man
that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers,
they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well
doing, than for evil doing. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins,
the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death
in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached
unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once
the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was
a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The
like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the
putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience
toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: Who is gone into heaven,
and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being
made subject unto him. Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in
the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath
suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live
the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the
will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have
wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts,
excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein
they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess
of riot, speaking evil of you: Who shall give account to him that
is ready to judge the quick and the dead. For for this cause was the gospel
preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according
to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. But the end
of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity
shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without
grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister
the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man
minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that
God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise
and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Beloved, think it not strange concerning
the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened
unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings;
that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding
joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for
the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil
spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer
as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a
busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian,
let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. For the
time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if
it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them
that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved,
where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? Wherefore let them that
suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to
him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. The elders which are
among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings
of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed
the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof,
not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready
mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples
to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive
a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves
unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be
clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to
the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that
he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth
for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a
roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast
in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your
brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called
us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered
a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To
him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

(1 Peter 3:8 - 1 Peter 5:11)

-
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have
obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and
our Saviour Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through
the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power
hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby
are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these
ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption
that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence,
add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance;
and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness
brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things
be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be
barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he
that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten
that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give
diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things,
ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly
into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
-
(2 Peter 1:1 - 11)
-
-
But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness,
and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they
are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. Whereas angels, which are greater
in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the
Lord. But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed,
speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish
in their own corruption; And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness,
as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they
are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while
they feast with you; Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease
from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous
practices; cursed children: Which have forsaken the right way, and are
gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved
the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb
ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet. These
are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom
the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. For when they speak great swelling
words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through
much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in
error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants
of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought
in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world
through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again
entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than
the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way
of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the
holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according
to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and
the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
-
(2 Peter 2:10 - 22)
-
-
Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which
ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have
heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which
thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the
true light now shineth. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his
brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth
in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that
hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth
not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. I write
unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's
sake.
-
(1 John 2 :7 - 12)
-
-
And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we
may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. If ye
know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness
is born of him.
-
(1 John 2:28 - 1 John 2:29)
-
-
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should
be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because
it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet
appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall
be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this
hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth
sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is
no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not
seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he
that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that
committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning.
For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the
works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his
seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In
this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever
doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should
love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew
his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil,
and his brother's righteous. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate
you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love
the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever
hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal
life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because
he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives
for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother
have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how
dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in
word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that
we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our
heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward
God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments,
and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment,
That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one
another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments
dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us,
by the Spirit which he hath given us.

God's gift of eternal life is free, but it costs us something to attain
it. We were bought with a price.

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men,
be strong. Let all your things be done with charity.
