They Came to be Healed
-
God the Son came into the world for three main reasons, to
preach the good news of the Kingdom, to fulfil many of the Biblical prophesies
about the Messiah, and to become mankind's Covenant Representative1
with God the Father.
-
And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns,
that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.
-
(Mark 1:38)
-
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom
of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
-
(Mark 1:15)
-
-
Besides His compassion for suffering mankind, Jesus used His (God's) power
of healing to draw man to His presence.
-
He had no empty churches to preach in, the people pressed about Him so
that He could hardly breathe.
-
But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude
from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea, And from Jerusalem, and from
Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon,
a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto
him. And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him
because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. For he had healed
many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as
had plagues.
-
(Mark 3:7-10)
-
-
The fact that Jesus, who is God, waited some thirty years before beginning
His public ministry; as well as the purpose for it, namely announcing the
coming of the Kingdom of God, is so magnificent that we are inclined to
overlook its nature.
-
-
The average person heard about Jesus of Nazareth and flocked to Him, to
hear the new message of this "Prophet", as well as to be healed:
-
When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son,
thy sins be forgiven thee. But there were certain of the scribes
sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man
thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately
when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves,
he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in
your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy
sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive
sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I
say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all;
insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never
saw it on this fashion. And he went forth again by the sea side; and all
the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.
-
(Mark 2:5-13)
-
And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him
all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said
unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert
place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and
they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert
place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew
him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came
together unto him. And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was
moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having
a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. And when the day was
now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert
place, and now the time is far passed: Send them away, that they
may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves
bread: for they have nothing to eat. He answered and said unto them, Give
ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred
pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He saith unto them, How
many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five,
and two fishes. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies
upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.
And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up
to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his
disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them
all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets
full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the
loaves were about five thousand men.
-
(Mark 6:30-44)
-
But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a
spirit, and cried out: For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately
he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good
cheer: it is I; be not afraid. And he went up unto them into the
ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond
measure, and wondered. For they considered not the miracle of the
loaves: for their heart was hardened.
And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and
drew to the shore. And when they were come out of the ship, straightway
they knew him, And ran through that whole region round about, and began
to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. And
whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid
the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were
but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
-
(Mark 6:49-56)
-
And sometimes they went to be cared for:
-
When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples,
they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. And
when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him,
Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but
because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat
which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
-
(John 6:24-27)
-
-
However, and here is the crux of this writing, only some heard the
preaching of Jesus:
-
And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: And
it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls
of the air came and devoured it up. And some fell on stony ground, where
it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no
depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it
had no root, it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns
grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. And other fell on good
ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth,
some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. And he said unto
them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And
when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him
the parable. And he said unto them, Unto
you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them
that are without, all these things are done in parables: That seeing
they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand;
lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should
be forgiven them.
-
(Mark 4:2-12)
-
Those whose hearts were right with God reacted to the teaching of Jesus
and followed Him about continually, living with Him, sleeping in the fields,
learning:
-
And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was
in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
-
(Mark 4:36)
-
(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;)
and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
-
(Mark 15:41)
-
And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village,
preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve
were with him, And certain women, which had been healed of evil
spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven
devils, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and
many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
-
(Luke 8:1-3)
-
After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them
two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself
would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest
truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore
the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither
purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever
house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son
of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn
to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things
as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house
to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat
such things as are set before you: And heal the sick that are therein,
and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever
city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets
of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on
us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that
the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
-
(Luke 10:1-11)
-
And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee,
stood afar off, beholding these things.
-
(Luke 23:49)
-
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus,
which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked
together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that,
while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near,
and went with them. But their
eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto
them, What manner of communications are these
that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one
of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only
a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to
pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What
things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which
was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And
how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death,
and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should
have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since
these things were done. Yea, and certain women also of our company made
us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; And when they found not
his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels,
which said that he was alive. And certain of them which were with us went
to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but
him they saw not. Then he said unto them, O fools,
and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not
Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in
all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto
the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone
further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward
evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And
it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed
it, and brake, and gave to them. And
their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of
their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within
us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the
eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
-
(Luke 24:13-33)
-
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the
women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. And in those
days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number
of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
-
(Acts 1:14-15)
-
-
The same problem occurred also in the Old Covenant:
-
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne,
high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the
seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and
with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried
unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts:
the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door
moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man
of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips:
for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then flew one of the
seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had
taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my
mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is
taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying,
Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am
I; send me. And he said, Go,
and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see
ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make
their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and
hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and
be healed. Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities
be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land
be utterly desolate, And the LORD have removed men far away, and there
be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. But yet in it shall
be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil
tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast
their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.
-
(Isaiah 6:1-13)
-
-
It's the same in the churches of today.
-
-
But they all need to be preached to, whether they will hear or not!
-
-
And the servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle unto all men,
apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves;
if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the
truth;
-
(2 Timothy 2:24-25)
-
-
This is a great mystery of God which shall be revealed one day; that God
gives repentance to or withholds repentance from whosoever He will:
-
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are
not all Israel, which are of Israel: Neither, because they are the seed
of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed
be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are
not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for
the seed. For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come,
and Sara shall have a son. And not only this; but when Rebecca also
had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; (For the children
being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose
of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that
calleth;) It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it
is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. What shall we say
then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he saith
to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have
compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of
him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I
raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might
be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he
will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then
unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay
but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed
say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not
the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto
honour, and another unto dishonour? What if God, willing to shew
his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering
the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that he might make known
the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared
unto glory, Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also
of the Gentiles?
-
(Romans 9:6-24)
-
Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless
afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which
are exercised thereby. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and
the feeble knees; And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which
is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. Follow peace
with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root
of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for
one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward,
when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found
no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
-
(Hebrews 12:11-17)
-
-
It would also appear that those who are supernaturally healed today by
the power of God must believe that God is who He says He is and
willingly submit their whole lives to their Creator, hoping for God's blessings
of repentance and healing, knowing that the rest of their lives here on
earth and in the future are to be lived in obedience to their Loving Heavenly
Father.
-
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on
unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead
works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying
on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
And this will we do, if God permit. For it is impossible for those
who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were
made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God,
and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew
them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of
God afresh, and put him to an open shame. For the earth which drinketh
in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for
them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: But that which
beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing;
whose end is to be burned. But, beloved, we are persuaded better
things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love,
which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the
saints, and do minister.
-
(Hebrews 6:1-10)
-
-
It therefore becomes apparent that Jesus showed us that being converted
is much more important that being healed of bodily disease.
-
And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto
thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; And wheresoever he taketh him, he
teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away:
and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could
not. He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation,
how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto
me. And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway
the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And
he asked his father, How long is it ago since this
came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it hath cast
him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst
do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him,
If thou canst believe, all things are possible
to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried
out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help
thou mine unbelief.
-
(Mark 9:17-24)
-
When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples,
they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. And
when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him,
Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but
because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat
which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works
of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is
the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. They
said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see,
and believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the
desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus
said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses
gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true
bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven,
and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore
give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am
the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have
seen me, and believe not.
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to
me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine
own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will
which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing,
but should raise it up again at the last day.
-
(John 6:24-39)
-
-
But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them
all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many.
All that cometh is vanity. Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and
let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways
of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for
all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
