The Fall of Mankind
-
-
We all know the story of Adam and Eve quite well.
-
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden
thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou
shalt surely die.
-
(Genesis 2:16-17)
-
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception;
in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be
to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because
thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree,
of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is
the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the
days of thy life;
-
(Genesis 3:16-17)
-
Have you ever really wondered why this story is right in the front of the
Bible?
-
Because, throughout this great book, God the Creator is trying to show
what could happen to us and calling to us to love Him.
-
What is the call?
-
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we
have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the
word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience
received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect
so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord,
and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing
them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles,
and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
-
(Hebrews 2:1-4)
-
-
What are we being warned about?
-
-
The pride that is in the human heart, which is the soul.
-
-
When we bury our pride at the cross, because Jesus did, Jesus gives us
a converted heart.
-
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness
of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man
on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this
mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form
of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of
no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in
the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself,
and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore
God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every
name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things
in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
-
(Philippians 2:3-11)
-
-
Our duty is to keep our heart clean for Him.
-
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God
sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned
sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled
in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that
are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are
after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is
death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the
carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the
law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot
please God.

(Romans 8:3-8)

Here are just some texts in the Bible concerning pride:
-
After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha
the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that
were with him. And all the king's servants, that were in
the king's gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded
concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence. Then
the king's servants, which were in the king's gate, said unto Mordecai,
Why transgressest thou the king's commandment? Now it came to pass, when
they spake daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told
Haman, to see whether Mordecai's matters would stand: for he had told them
that he was a Jew. And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor
did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath. And he thought scorn to
lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai:
wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout
the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
-
(Esther 3:1-6)
-
Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod
hath blossomed, pride hath budded.
-
(Ezekiel 7:10)
-
Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess
their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their
holy places shall be defiled.
-
(Ezekiel 7:24)
-
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to
it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles'
feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie
to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it
not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart?
thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words
fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that
heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried
him out, and buried him. And it was about the space of three
hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter
answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she
said, Yea, for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have
agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them
which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee
out. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost:
and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her
forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the
church, and upon as many as heard these things.

(Acts 5:1-11)

For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the
bond of iniquity.
-
(Acts 8:23)
-
And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came
with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain
their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the
king's country. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel,
sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave
a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And
immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the
glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

**************
-
-
All regular church-goers have heard about Sodom and Gomorrah and how the
LORD destroyed both places. In this writer's experience, most people seem
to believe that God destroyed them because of their perverted sexual behaviour.
However, if we read the primary Scriptural passages, we see that there
might be more than one reason:
-
And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the
tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and,
lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet
them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said,
My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray
thee, from thy servant: Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and
wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: And I will fetch a
morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on:
for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou
hast said. And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make
ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes
upon the hearth. And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender
and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.
And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set
it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did
eat. And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said,
Behold, in the tent. And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according
to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah
heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham
and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it
ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed
within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my
lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah
laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing
too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according
to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then Sarah denied, saying,
I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went
with them to bring them on the way. And the LORD said, Shall I hide from
Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become
a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed
in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household
after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment;
that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and
because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and see whether
they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto
me; and if not, I will know. And the men turned their faces from thence,
and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. And Abraham
drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy
and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with
the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far
from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? And the LORD
said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare
all the place for their sakes. And Abraham answered and said, Behold now,
I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and
ashes: Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt
thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find
there forty and five, I will not destroy it. And he spake unto him
yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And
he said, I will not do it for forty's sake. And he said unto
him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there
shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I
find thirty there. And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak
unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said,
I will not destroy it for twenty's sake. And he said, Oh let not
the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten
shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's
sake. And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with
Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
-
(Genesis 18:1-33)
-
And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of
Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself
with his face toward the ground; And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn
in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash
your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said,
Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. And he pressed upon them
greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he
made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. But
before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom,
compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every
quarter: And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are
the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that
we may know them. And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the
door after him, And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. Behold
now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you,
bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes:
only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow
of my roof. And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This
one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now
will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon
the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. But the men
put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to
the door. And they smote the men that were at the door of the house
with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to
find the door. And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son
in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the
city, bring them out of this place: For we will destroy this place,
because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and
the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. And Lot went out, and spake unto his
sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of
this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that
mocked unto his sons in law. And when the morning arose, then the angels
hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which
are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while
he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his
wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto
him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. And it came
to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape
for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain;
escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. And Lot said unto them,
Oh, not so, my Lord: Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight,
and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving
my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and
I die: Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is
a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?)
and my soul shall live. And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee
concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the
which thou hast spoken. Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any
thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called
Zoar. The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. Then
the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the
LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and
all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before
the LORD: And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land
of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as
the smoke of a furnace.

(Genesis 19:1-28)

Here is the real reason. God is speaking through the prophet of the Babylonian
captivity, Ezekiel, to the inhabitants of His chosen City, Jerusalem, which
has already been breached once by the Babylonians:
-
How weak is thine heart, saith the Lord GOD, seeing thou doest all these
things, the work of an imperious whorish woman; In that thou buildest
thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place
in every street; and hast not been as an harlot, in that thou scornest
hire; But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh
strangers instead of her husband! They give gifts to all whores: but thou
givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come
unto thee on every side for thy whoredom. And the contrary is in thee from
other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit
whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto
thee, therefore thou art contrary. Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of
the LORD: Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out,
and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and
with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children,
which thou didst give unto them; Behold, therefore I will gather all thy
lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou
hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather
them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them,
that they may see all thy nakedness. And I will judge thee, as women that
break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in
fury and jealousy. And I will also give thee into their hand, and they
shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places:
they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels,
and leave thee naked and bare. They shall also bring up a company against
thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with
their swords. And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments
upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from
playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more.
-
(Ezekiel 16:30-41)
-
Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against
thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. Thou
art thy mother's daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children;
and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands
and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father
an Amorite. And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters
that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy
right hand, is Sodom and her daughters. Yet hast thou not walked
after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that
were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they
in all thy ways. As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister
hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread,
and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did
she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and
committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.
-
(Ezekiel 16:44-50)

-
Here are some other pertinent mentions of Sodom and their context:
-
These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go
not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans
enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And
as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick,
cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received,
freely give. Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor
yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. And into whatsoever
city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide
till ye go thence. And when ye come into an house, salute it. And if the
house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy,
let your peace return to you. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor
hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the
dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for
the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore
wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will
deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony
against them and the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, take no thought
how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour
what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your
Father which speaketh in you.
-
(Matthew 10:5-20)
-
Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were
done, because they repented not: Woe unto thee, Chorazin!
woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you,
had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth
and ashes. But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and
Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which
art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty
works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have
remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable
for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
-
(Matthew 11:20-24)
-
After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them
two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself
would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest
truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore
the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither
purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever
house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son
of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn
to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things
as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house
to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat
such things as are set before you: And heal the sick that are therein,
and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever
city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets
of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on
us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that
the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But I say unto you, that it shall
be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. Woe unto thee,
Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done
in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while
ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable
for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum,
which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell. He that heareth
you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth
me despiseth him that sent me.
-
(Luke 10:1-16)
-
And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should
come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God
cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there!
for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. And he said unto
the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall
desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them,
nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the
one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under
heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day. But first must he suffer
many things, and be rejected of this generation. And as it was in the days
of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat,
they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the
day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them
all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank,
they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that
Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed
them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is
revealed. In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff
in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in
the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot's wife. Whosoever
shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his
life shall preserve it.
-
(Luke 17:20-33)
-
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall
be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies,
even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift
destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of
whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness
shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now
of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. For if
God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell,
and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto
judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person,
a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the
ungodly; And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned
them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those
that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the
filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among
them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to
day with their unlawful deeds;) The Lord knoweth how to deliver
the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of
judgment to be punished: But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in
the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they,
selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
-
(2 Peter 2:1-10)
-
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are
sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and
called: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. Beloved, when
I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was
needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should
earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained
to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness,
and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. I will therefore
put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having
saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that
believed not. And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left
their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness
unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the
cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication,
and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering
the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these filthy dreamers
defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. Yet Michael
the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body
of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The
Lord rebuke thee. But these speak evil of those things which they know
not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they
corrupt themselves. Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain,
and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in
the gainsaying of Core.
-
(Jude 1:1-11)
-
And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy
a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before
the God of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out
of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them,
he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that
it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to
turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as
they will. And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast
that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and
shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie
in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and
Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. And they of the people and kindreds
and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half,
and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that
dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall
send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that
dwelt on the earth. And after three days and an half the Spirit of life
from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear
fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven
saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud;
and their enemies beheld them.
-
(Revelation 11:3-12)
-
-
We see that in all instances the mention of Sodom concerns rebellion to
God.
-
Rebellion means that there is no acceptance of Lordship; "I'll do things
my way".
-
As we saw in the Romans eight passage, if we are in rebellion individually,
that is carnally minded, we shall not be part of the first resurrection.
-
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that
they were righteous, and despised others: Two men
went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that
I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or
even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that
I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much
as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God
be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house
justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself
shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

(Luke 18:9-14)
-
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused
him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if
we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

The opposite of pride of heart is humbleness of heart. To Israel, God called
it a heart of stone and a heart of flesh.
-
This is one of the key passages to those aspiring to be saints of God:
-
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed
from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then
made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after
the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have
yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity;
even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

Here are a few more passages of many, of what God expects of His servants
on a day to day basis:
-
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his
Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; Making
request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey
by the will of God to come unto you. For I long to see you, that I may
impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith
both of you and me. Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes
I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have
some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
-
(Romans 1:9-13)
-
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where
Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above,
not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with
Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then
shall ye also appear with him in glory. Mortify therefore your members
which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection,
evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things'
sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which
ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off
all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of
your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old
man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed
in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither
Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond
nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore,
as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness
of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving
one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave
you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity,
which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your
hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and
admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or
deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
and the Father by him. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands,
as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not
bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things:
for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children
to anger, lest they be discouraged. Servants, obey in all things
your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers;
but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it
heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye
shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done:
and there is no respect of persons.

(Colossians 3:1-25)
-
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city,
and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know
not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It
is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth
away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live,
and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing
is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it
not, to him it is sin.

Man's pride is hostile to God's loving dominion.

The opposite of pride is humbleness, a life in submission to God.

He will accept no other.
-
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness
and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

(Psalms 138:2)
-
And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first
day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all
seasons, Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears,
and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And
how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed
you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying
both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith
toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit
unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save
that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions
abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear
unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry,
which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace
of God.

(Acts 20:18-24)
-
Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the
chief priests, At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven,
above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which
journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a
voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul,
Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against
the pricks. And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said,
I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for
I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and
a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things
in the which I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people,
and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their
eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from
the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins,
and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:
But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout
all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should
repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

(Acts 26:12-20)
-
- But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud,
but giveth grace to the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist
the devil and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God and he will draw
nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: and purify your hearts, ye
double minded.
