Chastisement
-
-
Chastise :- to inflict punishment upon for the purpose of correction; to
reduce to order or to obedience.
-
This word, strange as it may seem at first, is a derivative of the word
chaste; which is described as :-sexually virtuous; modest; refined and
pure in taste and style.
-
Another derivative is the word chasten :- to free from faults by punishing;
to punish; to purify or refine; to restrain or moderate.
-
-
So, like the heading word of the previous article1 in this series,
at first glance the word above is a no-no, and many who peruse this web
site2 will read the heading and pass over the teaching concerned
with an inward shudder and miss the resultant blessing. Admit it to yourself,
you felt it also and are maybe reading this now "with teeth set on edge".
-
-
Let's take the matter further and see how we can be blessed by our heavenly
Father with whom we are in Covenant through the blood of our Covenant Representative3,
Christ Jesus.
-
-
It was shown in the first article in this series1 that God warned
the citizens of the nation of Israel, through His servant Jeremiah, that
although they were the Covenant nation, they each had better put their
lives in obedience to the Covenant that was made at mount Sinai or they
would be chastised.
-
-
We see below that because they refused to change their ways, some were
killed and others were captured and taken away as slaves to Babylon:
-
Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet
sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away
captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people
whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;
(After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes
of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed
from Jerusalem;) By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah
the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar
king of Babylon) saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel,
unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried
away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;
-
(Jeremiah 29:1-4)
-
-
However, they were still God's Covenant nation and when they woke up to
the fact that what He had warned them about through His various prophets
had indeed come to pass, it was too late to do anything about it because
they were now slaves of the Babylonians.
-
Their whole attitude changed and many turned to God and as a result of
their repentance, God once more blessed them:
-
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Thus speaketh the
LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken
unto thee in a book. For, lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will
bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the LORD:
and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers,
and they shall possess it. And these are the words that the LORD
spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah. For thus saith the LORD;
We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. Ask ye now,
and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every
man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are
turned into paleness? Alas! for that day is great, so that none
is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he
shall be saved out of it. For it shall come to pass in that day, saith
the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck,
and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves
of him: But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king,
whom I will raise up unto them. Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob,
saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee
from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall
return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him
afraid. For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though
I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will
I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and
will not leave thee altogether unpunished. For thus saith the LORD, Thy
bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous. There
is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast
no healing medicines. All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee
not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement
of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy
sins were increased. Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy sorrow is
incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins
were increased, I have done these things unto thee. Therefore all they
that devour thee shall be devoured; and all thine adversaries, every one
of them, shall go into captivity; and they that spoil thee shall be a spoil,
and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey. For I will restore
health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because
they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no
man seeketh after. Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will bring again the
captivity of Jacob's tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the
city shall be builded upon her own heap, and the palace shall remain after
the manner thereof. And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the
voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall
not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small. Their
children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established
before me, and I will punish all that oppress them. And their nobles shall
be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them;
and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who
is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the LORD.
And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. Behold, the whirlwind
of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall
with pain upon the head of the wicked. The fierce anger of the LORD shall
not return, until he have done it, and until he have performed the
intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it.
-
(Jeremiah 30:1-24)
-
-
God's thoughts were of peace because He is love. (see Jeremiah 29:7; 29:11;
30:5.)
-
-
However, they were still under the law, the Covenant at Sinai (Exodus 19
and 20).
-
Even so, Jeremiah prophesied of the new and better Covenant:
-
And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them,
to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and
to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the
LORD. In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour
grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge. But every one shall die
for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall
be set on edge. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make
a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not
according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that
I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my
covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of
Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward
parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall
be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and
every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me,
from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I
will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
-
(Jeremiah 31:28-34)
-
-
We know from Paul's letter to the Galatians that the old Covenant (the
law) was but an example, as a lesson given by a Schoolmaster, for us who
live by faith.
-
-
If we are reborn of the Spirit and are therefore in Covenant with God through
the finished work of Jesus Christ, God shall bless us with His presence,
as He did with the children of Israel in the days of David the king, while
we live in the Spirit.
-
When we individually start living carnally once more, we are in danger
of encountering God's anger:
-
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ
Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law
of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of
sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through
the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and
for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law
might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but
they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally
minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and
peace.
-
(Romans 8:1-6)
-
-
God still cares for us, just as He does for the children of Israel today,
but we can expect temptations to refine us and punishment when in disobedience
to God's righteousness.
-
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined
in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of
God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels,
that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are
troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but
not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the
life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live
are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus
might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us,
but life in you. We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is
written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and
therefore speak; Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise
up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. For all things
are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving
of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but
though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day
by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for
us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look
not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen:
for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which
are not seen are eternal.
-
(2 Corinthians 4:6-18)
-
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes
which are scattered abroad, greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when
ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of
your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work,
that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
-
(James 1:1-4)
-
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us,
and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto
Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that
was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down
at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such
contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint
in your minds. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children,
My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou
art rebuked of him: For whom
the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son
is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement,
whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore
we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave
them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the
Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us
after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we
might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth
to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable
fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Wherefore
lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight
paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way;
but let it rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness,
without which no man shall see the Lord:
-
(Hebrews 12:1-14)
-
-
Part of the reason of chastisement is to ensure that we know who God is
- that He is rightfully entitled to chastise us His children:
-
From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they
not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust,
and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight
and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not,
because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye
adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world
is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is
the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit
that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore
he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit
yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands,
ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning,
and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the
Lord, and he shall lift you up.
-
(James 4:1-10)
-
Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall
come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are
motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall
be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye
have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the
labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by
fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into
the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth,
and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist
you. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold,
the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long
patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also
patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold,
the judge standeth before the door. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who
have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction,
and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard
of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord
is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. But above all things, my brethren,
swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other
oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into
condemnation.
-
(James 5:1-12)
-
-
Another reason is to expect and accept persecutions from worldly people
just because you are different. They perceive your Spiritual life and are
in fear of the consequences of their lifestyles:
-
And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death,
and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their
parents, and cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all
men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be
saved.
-
(Matthew 10:21-22)
-
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation,
a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past
were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had
not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Dearly beloved, I beseech
you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which
war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles:
that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your
good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether
it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are
sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them
that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put
to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your
liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour
all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. Servants,
be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the
good and gentle, but also to the froward. For this is thankworthy,
if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye
shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it,
ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto
were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example,
that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found
in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered,
he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being
dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were
healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the
Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
-
(1 Peter 2:9-25)
-
-
As has been reported on in many articles on this web site2 in
the past: should we backslide and follow the world once more, casting the
Covenant aside, we are in very serious trouble with our Creator the Jealous
God:
-
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on
unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead
works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying
on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
And this will we do, if God permit. For it is impossible for those
who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were
made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God,
and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew
them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of
God afresh, and put him to an open shame. For the earth which drinketh
in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for
them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: But that which
beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing;
whose end is to be burned.
-
(Hebrews 6:1-8)
-
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the
truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful
looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who
hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the
covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite
unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth
unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge
his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the
living God.
-
(Hebrews 10:26-31)
-
-
This is why there is chastisement by the loving God to His children - to
bring them back into obedience:
-
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried,
he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them
that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God:
for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every
man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then
when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished,
bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift
and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of
lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his
own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of
firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every
man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man
worketh not the righteousness of God.
-
(James 1:12-20)

From the little book "Living for Jesus".
-
Correction, an Expression of Love
-
-
Whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom
he delighteth.
-
(Proverbs 3:12)
-
-
Fortunate is the child whose father spares not the rod. As children,
we often saw punishment as a token that our father did not love us. As
adults, we realise we were punished because our father did love
us. A true father's love seeks to bring out the child's finest and best.
-
God, the Father corrects those whom He loves and fits them for heavenly
society. The wise father corrects the child in order that he might not
be a social outcast. God corrects His family of saints to teach them right
from wrong. The father who loves his child, and punishes him for his misdeeds,
is creating an impression upon that child which will make for a life of
honesty and uprightness.
-
Through correction, obedience is learned. A woman travelling through
the Alps, came across a shepherd with his flock. She expressed sympathy
for a certain sheep with a broken leg. Said the shepherd "I broke that
sheep's leg. It was the most troublesome sheep I had and the most prone
to wander. When I broke its leg it stayed in the shelter. At first it showed
resentment when I tried to feed it. Gradually it accepted my attention.
Now it shows actual affection for me. When the leg is healed that sheep
will be the most obedient one of all,"
-
-
Our Father, we too have been corrected at thy hand. We look back and
recognise that correction is a blessing. May we deal wisely and lovingly
in our homes, even as Thou hast dealt with us.
-
-
Food for thought:
-
The fact that most Governments under "western" influence have made God's
law of parental chastisement illegal is a clear indication that Satan,
the god of this world, is preparing for the chaos that shall inevitably
occur when the world's money system crashes and there shall be no energy
sources available for the use of the population.
